Deadline for euward extended

Until 22 July 2020 artists with cognitive impairments may submit entries

(May 13, 2020)

The deadline for euward, the Award for Painting and Graphic Arts in the Context of Mental Disability, by the Munich-based Augustinum Foundation was extended in view of the current difficulties in proceeding. Until July 22, 2020, artists with cognitive impairments may submit entries to the respected art award. The prize will be awarded at an exhibition opening ceremony in April 2021 at Haus der Kunst in Munich. Information about how to submit applications can be found on www.euward.de.

The Augustinum Foundation has awarded the euward since 2000. This distinction is the most important award internationally for art in the context of mental disability. In 2020 it will be awarded for the 8th time. In recent years, each competition received submissions from between 300 and 800 artists from over 25 European countries.

euward’s goal is to promote unknown artists and to make their creativity accessible to the public. A jury of renowned professionals (amongst them Christian Berst, gallerist and curator, Paris; Dr. Carine Fol, director of Centrale for contemporary art, Brussels; Nico van der Endt, curator and gallerist, Amsterdam; Dr. Graciela García Muñoz, curator, Madrid; Dr. Monika Jagfeld, director, St. Gallen) chooses three prizewinners from entries submitted from across Europe. They receive an exhibition of their works in Haus der Kunst, Munich. They are also supported with cash prizes and a catalogue of their works, totalling about 19,000 Euros in value.

The art of people with a mental disability has developed strongly in recent years. Alongside the tradition of “Art Brut” or “Outsider Art”, it now forms a new artistic scene. “Supervised studios” often provide the conditions that the talents need to realise themselves as freelance artists. euward’s aspiration is to reveal the artistic quality in the work of these cultural outsiders. Purely social aspects do not play a role.
