Ylonka Elisabeth Jaspers

Ylonka Elisabeth Jaspers
Ylonka Elisabeth Jaspers was born in 1984 in Roosendaal, Netherlands. Even while still at special school, the remarkable creative gifts of Ylonka, who was considered autistic - and her twin sister Ylona - were recognized and encouraged by artists. When her schooldays came to an end, Ylonka Jaspers found, in the "Atelier Artilabo" in Breda, the specialist support that would allow her to turn her gift into a profession.

"Dragon", 2006,

In her artistic work, Ylonka Jaspers is guided by her strong urge to explore. To conceive her works, she always undertakes intensive source studies, researching in books and the Internet. Though at first drawing on vampire and horror stories from young people's books, Jaspers soon turned to more profound themes. She is occupied with contemporary historic events, motifs from Egyptology, themes and stories from the Christian religion, or the lives of important historic figures. The fate of Anne Frank plays an important role in her work. Her diary entries, reflecting a thought world extraordinarily mature for her years, occupied Jaspers for a long time.

The textual complexity of her works is matched by the diversity of forms, techniques and media that Jasper uses in its realisation. She processes the most diverse of materials, collected objects, photos, pieces of clothing in collages and montages, combining them with drawings and texts. In Jasper's works, text and literature play a very important role, often equal to the drawing, painting or fabric montage. One of the artist's many ambitions has long been to find fulfilment through poetry and writing, as well.
